Common European (Metric) Window Sizes
- Widths: 600, 700, 800, 900, 1,000, 1,200, 1,500, 1,800, 2,100, 2,400 mm
- Heights: 600, 700, 800, 900, 1,000, 1,200, 1,500, 1,800, 2,100, 2,400 mm
The 2,500 mm Structural Threshold
- Under 2,500 mm per sash: Standard production, no structural reinforcement required.
- 2,500–3,000 mm per sash: Engineering review required; may need a reinforced sash section or structural mullion.
- Above 3,000 mm per sash: Structural support bar or mullion required—this becomes a custom engineering project.
Starveil production note: Starveil standard production covers apertures from 300 × 300 mm to 2,500 × 2,700 mm per sash. Above 2,500 mm we provide structural engineering documentation as part of the standard quotation.

When to Specify Custom Sizes (Beyond Standard Aluminium Window Sizes)
- Your structural opening exceeds 2,400 mm in either dimension
- Your opening has non-standard proportions (very tall and narrow, or very wide and short)
- Your wall depth is outside the standard 100–250 mm range
- You want glass-only (no visible frame) for architectural effect
- Your project needs a specific sightline dimension standard sizes cannot achieve
- Cost premium: 20–40% above standard production pricing
- Lead time: 4–8 weeks additional for custom tooling and engineering
- Engineering documentation: Required above 2,500 mm per sash
Regional Building Code Requirements
UK (Building Regulations Part L and Q)
- Part L (Conservation of Fuel and Power): Uw maximum 1.6 W/m²K for replacement windows in existing dwellings (as of 2022).
- Part Q (Security): PAS 24 Enhanced Security required for windows in easily accessible locations (ground floor, roof terrace).
- Document Q compliance: Multi-point locking, laminated or toughened glass.
EU (CE Marking / Energy Performance of Buildings Directive)
- EN 14351-1: Mandatory CE marking for all windows sold in the EU.
- EPBD (2018/844/EU): U-value limits vary by member state; most require Uw below 1.5 W/m²K for new builds.
- AAMA 2605: Not mandatory in the EU, but increasingly specified by architects as the quality benchmark.
Australia (NCC Volume 2 / AS 2047)
- NCC Section J: Energy efficiency requirements for all new residential buildings.
- AS 2047: Performance requirements including water penetration (minimum 150 Pa), air infiltration, and operating force.
- Bushfire BAL ratings: AS 3959 governs window specifications in bushfire-prone areas—Starveil supplies systems rated to BAL-FZ (the highest bushfire attack level).
